Measuring the health risks of 9,000 nurses and counting

Share

American Nurses Association’s (ANA) HealthyNurseTM Health Risk Appraisal (HRA) has been up and running for more than 2 years and is already a useful resource for promoting and maintaining the health and wellness of nurses. Using this confidential and HIPAA-compliant survey, participants identify personal and professional health, safety, and wellness risks; compare their personal results against ideal standards and national averages; gain access to an interactive web wellness portal; and help build a nurse-specific personal and occupational risk aggregated data base. ANA is conducting the project in collaboration with Pfizer Inc.

More than 9,000 registered nurses and nursing students have participated in the survey. The web-based survey has been offered at many nursing conferences over the past 2 years across the country and will continue to be offered at several 2016 nursing conferences. The HRA remains open for any RN and RN student participation. Participants can view the HRA at any time on most electronic devices at http://nursingworld.org/HRA-Executive-Summary.

Additional survey questions and initiatives

In 2014, ANA updated the HRA to include questions regarding whether the survey participant works for a facility that holds the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s MagnetTM or Pathway to ExcellenceTM recognition status and participates in other quality indicators, as well as if the participant attended a new nurse residency program at the start of his or her career.

ANA published an executive summary in October 2015 on the HRA’s first year of findings, available at ANA’s HealthyNurseTM website: www.anahealthynurse.org. The summary highlights key findings from the HRA’s demographic, work environment, and health, safety, and wellness sections, with helpful graphs included.

In 2015, ANA implemented additional HealthyNurse-related initiatives to encourage nurse participation. #FitNurseFriday is a social media mini-campaign with weekly wellness and lifestyle posts appearing on Facebook and Twitter, designed to impart fun wellness information and act as conversation starters for the nursing community.

ANA’s HealthyNurseTM website has been updated with a tobacco cessation section. Here, nurses can access information and resources to assist them, a friend or family member, or a patient to quit tobacco use.

Now is the time for all nurses to focus on their own health, safety, and wellness to be better role models, advocates and educators for family, coworkers, patients, and the broader community.
