A world of caring nurses

Marla Salmon, ScD, RN, FAAN, is senior editor of Nurse: A World
of Care, a book that celebrates the vital work of nurses around the world in photographs and words. What prompted her to develop the book?

“I am deeply touched by the work of my profession and have been privileged to see the remarkable things nurses do in countries around the world. I have also witnessed the enormous challenges nurses face every day. This book is my tribute to this dear profession of mine: It is also an invitation to people beyond nursing to see the critical role nurses play in the lives of people and whole societies worldwide—and to act on behalf of the future of caring.”
Marla—who is also Dean of Emory University’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing and Director of the Lillian Carter Center for International Nursing in Atlanta—developed the book with support from the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future and Emory University.  Former President Jimmy Carter wrote the foreword. Karen Kasmauki took the photographs, and Peter Jaret wrote the text. Both contribute frequently to National Geographic.
Nurse: A World of Care is available at www.nursingknowledge.org. Proceeds are used for the education of nurses in global health.
