Archived webinar on teaching IOM reports in the classroom now available on ANA’s NursesBooks.org

On February 23, more than 350 educators from top U.S. nursing schools tuned in to view Nursesbooks.org’s one-hour webinar featuring ANA’s popular quality title, Teaching IOM: Implications of the Institute of Medicine Reports for Nursing Education.

The webinar provides practical tips to nursing educational institutions on how best to produce graduates capable of rendering safe, high-quality care in the context of the IOM reports. The co-authors, Anita Finkelman, MSN, RN, and Carole Kenner, DNS, RNC, FAAN, discussed the IOM reports relevancy to nursing; why and how to integrate nursing education with nursing practice; and the five health care core competencies that frame the teaching strategies (provide patient-centered care, work on interdisciplinary teams, employ evidence-based practice, apply quality improvement, and utilize informatics). During the last 15 minutes of the webinar, the presenters took questions from the viewing audience.

The response to the webinar was very favorable, and 95% of the respondents in the post-webinar satisfaction survey indicated that they were very satisfied with the learning experience. They also noted that the information contained in the seminar was useful and provided the tools necessary for incorporation into the classroom.

Due to the program’s success and numerous requests for copies, Nursesbooks.org has made the audio-only archived presentation available for purchase at $14.95. Slides are available with purchase of the book.

Published last fall, the second edition of Teaching IOM: Implications of the Institute of Medicine Reports for Nursing Education provides even more content and examples. It describes additional IOM reports relevant to nursing, and the content on clinical implications, general nursing education issues, and the five health care core competencies has been expanded with more examples of teaching-learning strategies. Additions also include a list of abbreviations and a glossary. Webinar viewers can purchase the book at 20% off of the list price. To purchase the book with CD, please go to www.nursesbooks.org.
