Efficiency: ASCs vs. hospital outpatient departments

Author(s):Lydia L. Kim, Digital Content Editor

A recent study from The American Journal of Surgery analyzes the efficiency of operating rooms in hospital-owned ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) and hospital outpatient departments (HOPs).

The study examined 220 procedures performed in the researchers’ own ASCs (n=114) and HOPs (n=106), and compared five components of these facilities’ outpatient procedures: ancillary time, procedure time, exit time, turnover time, and nonoperative time.

The results revealed that the outpatient procedures were more efficient in the ASCs than those performed at the HOPs. Ultimately, the researchers identified areas to increase their HOPs’ operating room efficiency.
