New report: Nearly 1 in 5 older adults have one or more mental health and substance abuse conditions according

At least 5.6 million to 8 million – nearly one in five – older adults in America have one or more mental health and substance use condition according to the new report “The Mental Health and Substance Use Workforce for Older Adults: In Whose Hands?” from the Institute of Medicine. The report calls for a redesign of Medicare and Medicaid payment rules to guarantee coverage of counseling, care management, and other types of services related to mental health conditions and substance use problems.
