A new study offers insight into a question that’s plagued healthcare for some time: Does an association exist between statin use and cognitive decline?

A team from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, followed more than 1,000 elderly participants (age 70 to 90 years oldfor 6 yearsThe research goal was to determine if any distinctions in memory, cognition, and brain volume exist between a group of statin users and a group of non-users. The researchers also considered several variablesincluding but not limited to age, sex, BMI, and smoking historyin their analysis.

Over the 6 years, researchers were unable to identify a connection between statin use and cognitive decline

Statins are a common medication type used by all types of individuals, but especially by older individualsAlthough this study doesn’t definitively answer the question about statin use and cognitive decline, it seems to indicate that the medication doesn’t affect cognition.
