ENA study encourages more suicide screening in the ED

Share

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, and many people who die by suicide visit a healthcare provider in the year before taking their lives. Current evidence shows that 12.5% of emergency department visits are for behavioral health problems. And though only 3% will reveal suicidal thoughts, as many as 12% have them.

With that information in mind, read the study recently published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing, which identified several effective assessment processes, including verbal and nonverbal clues such as observing an individual’s behavior, reaction to questioning, emotional affect, and physical demeanor. You can read the study here.
