Three steps to lower childhood obesity

Preschool children who do one or more of the following have a lower risk for obesity, according to a study of 8,550 4-year-olds published online Feb. 8 by Pediatrics: eating dinner as a family, getting adequate sleep, and limiting weekday television viewing time. New guidelines from the American Heart Association

The American Heart Association has released two new guidelines:


Prevention of Torsade de Pointes in Hospital Settings. A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology Foundation

Androgen-Deprivation Therapy in Prostate Cancer and Cardiovascular Risk. A Science Advisory From the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and American Urological Association

FDA initiative to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure from imaging

On Feb. 9 the Food and Drug Administration announced a new initiative to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure from computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine studies, and fluoroscopy, all of which use much higher radiation doses than other radiographic procedures, such as standard X-rays, dental X-rays, and mammography. The three-pronged initiative includes promoting the safe use of medical imaging devices, supporting informed clinical decision-making, and increasing patient awareness of their own exposure.
