Program Purpose: To stimulate a national conversation around using acuity to optimize patient outcomes and nurse staffing.
American Nurse Today will convene a panel of nursing experts who will share their experiences with acuity driven staffing. The program will then transition to a discussion amongst the panel moderated by Lillee Gelinas, MSN, RN, FAAN, Editor-in-Chief, American Nurse Today and System Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, CHRISTUS Health System. The format of the event will encourage a robust Q&A session between the audience members and the panel.

Content of the panel discussion as well as the conversation between panel members and attendees will build on upcoming requirements for staffing adjusted to acuity in the ICU in Massachusetts, and consider how acuity measures can create value through an entire organization. We will also focus on how and why acuity measures, based on evidence, can/should be employed by any facility – nationwide – to optimize patient outcomes.
You will leave this cutting-edge program with an increased knowledge base of:
- What is the definition and purpose of acuity?
- What else can acuity be used for?
- What tools are organizations using to assess acuity?
- What is necessary to ensure the reliability and validity of an acuity system? Acuity has a tarnished reputation, as many past systems have been subjective, with every patient rated as “high”.
- How does nursing documentation impact acuity measures? New acuity systems are extracting nurse-generated data from the EHR.
- What are the practical issues of adjusting staffing to acuity? What happens when the acuity is high and there are no additional nurses? What happens when the acuity is low – do staff go home?
- Why do hospitals without legal or contract mandates use acuity systems?
- How does adjusting staffing to acuity impact nurse sensitive measures? How do we move the work of nursing from a list of tasks and toward better outcomes?
- What are innovative uses of acuity across the country?
